Lurking in the night
The simple nature of Kingdom: New Lands hides a complex and challenging strategy game. Players choose to be a king or queen atop a horse and then make decisions between a few basic options. Hire an archer to shoot animals for more coins, build walls to slow down attackers or construct a ship, building up a base against increasing monster raids. The difficultly comes in managing the camp, finding a balance between defence and money generation with a satisfying learning curve. Kingdom: New Lands has an adorable pixel art style with a dramatic light and dark cycle, immersive sounds and an interesting range of later game content. As a mobile game, the limited choices become a huge advantage as the room for imprecision is lessened.
Kingdom: New Lands is a cute strategy game with surprising depth and repeatability. Players will die often before getting the hang of managing camps, but trying a new approach is engaging and rewarding. While the game is fairly expensive for the amount of content on offer, it is still a good choice for an on-the-go strategy title.
